Werner Lehfeldt (born May 22, 1943 in Perleberg ) is a German Slavist .

Life

After primary school, Werner Lehfeldt first attended the Goethe High School in Perleberg and, after fleeing the GDR, from 1960 to 1962 the Baltic Sea High School Timmendorfer Strand , where he graduated from high school in 1962. From 1962 he studied Slavic Studies at the Universities of Mainz, Hamburg, Sarajevo and Bochum, in Bochum he obtained his doctorate in Slavic Studies and History in 1967 and became a research assistant there in the same year. In 1973 he completed his habilitation in Bochum and in 1976 was appointed to the chair of Slavic Studies in the Linguistics department at the University of Konstanz . In 1980 he turned down a call to the University of Hamburg , and in 1991 a call to the University of Geneva, where he taught as a visiting professor for a semester. Between 1979 and 1989 he also taught for ten semesters at the University of Basel . In 1991 he accepted a position at the University of Göttingen , where he held the chair for Slavic Philology (Linguistics) from April 1992 until his retirement on September 30, 2011. In 1992 he was elected a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts , in 1994 a member of the Academy of Nonprofit Sciences in Erfurt and in 2011 a member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society . Since February 9, 1996, he has been a full member of the Philological-Historical Class of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . From April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2012 he was chairman of this class and vice-president of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences. Since 1983 Lehfeldt was co-editor of the journal Russian Linguistics , from 1993 to 2006 its co-editor and chief editor. Main areas of work: Comparative morphology of the Slavic languages; diachronic and synchronous accentology of the Slavic languages; Morphosyntax of Russian; History of the Russian and Serbo-Croatian languages; Quantitative phonology; Language typology, history of science.
