Life

Werner Nolopp was born as the second son of the teacher and cathedral organist Heinrich Nolopp. He had six siblings and his father died early. After attending grammar school in Stendal, Nolopp worked as a typesetter , was for a time a private writer at the district office in Stendal and a piano teacher. Nolopp only took private lessons and passed the first teacher examination in Halberstadt in 1857 without ever having attended a teachers' seminar . He was then a travel and auxiliary school teacher in Carow and Detershagen . In 1860 Nolopp passed the second teacher examination in Osterburg . Supported by music director Zimmermann in Osterburg, who first recognized his musical talents, Nolopp received a position as teacher and organist in Walterburg. In 1864 Nolopp married the daughter of the superintendent Gevert in Magdeburg and then went to Wanzleben , where he worked as a schoolteacher for the poor. From 1865 he took over the position of sexton and daughter school teacher as an adjunct . In 1876 Nolopp took the position of cantor and organist in Aken and stayed there until 1894. Health problems then forced an early retirement . Nolopp then lived temporarily in Biederitz and Magdeburg-Neustadt . In Aken, Nolopp was head of the teachers' choir and also headed the local boat choir. Above all here he experienced a time of fruitful musical and literary creativity, which made him known far beyond his home country. In addition to songs and choral works, which have become common property of German singers in large numbers, Nolopp also created works for organ and orchestra . A complete edition of his works is missing, but some of his male choir works have been preserved. In Aken, a memorial has been erected for the versatile Werner Nolopp , a street and the primary school (formerly POS ) are named after him. There is also evidence from the period from 1875 to 1879 that Nolopp and some of his friends were carnivalist. They founded the so-called "Klumbatsch" association, which organized the carnival in Aken at the time. Under the name “Narraria” there are 5 magazines from this time, which the carnival society of the same name published annually. Since 2007 the Narraria Club Aken 1875 eV has continued the traditions of the time. Before that, various other associations (Red - White - Aken, Närrischer Männerchor Aken) had celebrated Mardi Gras in Aken. So there is a small anniversary in 2010 - 135 years of carnival activities in Aken, the roots of which go back to Werner Nolopp.
