Werner Schiffner

Werner Schiffner (* 16th December 1914 in Leipzig , † 2. August 1999 ) was a German cyclist and cycling - coach .

Athletic career

Schiffner was a member of the Vorwärts Leipzig workers' sports club until 1933 , where he played soccer . After 1933 he moved to Fortuna Leipzig (soccer and later athletics ). He began cycling at the age of 19 in the “First Step” competition for beginners and joined the RC Wettiner club in Leipzig, where the later Olympic champion Ernst Ihbe also trained. 1939 was his most successful year when he first won the Ore Mountains Tour Chemnitz - Karlsbad - Chemnitz (in the B class). He had thus qualified for the A-Class. A little later he won the Rund um die Hainleite . He also won other races, especially in Saxony .

The Second World War interrupted his athletic career. After returning from captivity, he drove as a professional driver from 1945 to 1949. In 1947 he took part in the IRA's Green Belt (which was considered a continuation of the Tour of Germany ) and was 11th in the overall ranking.

Schiffner began studying sports and became a cycling coach in 1950. First he worked at SC DHfK Leipzig , then as national trainer for road drivers in the GDR . From 1950 to 1964 he was the trainer of the GDR peace drive team. 1954 to 1973 he was partially parallel trainer at the SC DHfK Leipzig (together with Herbert Weisbrod) and national trainer, in 1973 he ended his trainer activity for health reasons.

Private

His son Michael was also a cyclist.
