Werner Tzscheetzsch
Werner Tzscheetzsch (* 1950 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian and university professor . His main research topics are church youth work and religious education .
Life
Werner Tzscheetzsch studied Catholic theology and educational science at the University of Freiburg after leaving school . He completed both subjects with a diploma. From 1978 to 1982 he worked for the Federation of German Catholic Youth in Freiburg as an education officer. In 1984 he received his doctorate and in 1992 his habilitation at the University of Freiburg. From 1990 to 1995 he was director of the Catholic Academy for Youth Issues in Altenberg (Diocese of Cologne).
From 1995 until his teaching license was revoked in 2009, Tzscheetzsch worked as a professor of pedagogy and catechetics at the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg. After that, until his retirement he held the professorship for school and social pedagogy at the Institute for Pedagogy at the same university, which was set up especially for him in the 2009/10 winter semester.
Tzscheetzsch is married and has three children.
Revocation of teaching permission
On January 19, 2009, the Archbishop of Freiburg, Robert Zollitsch, revoked his church teaching license after Tzscheetzsch had announced that he could no longer meet “the church's expectations of a university professor of Catholic theology”. Tzscheetzsch later stated that there was a lot that he could no longer do personally with what is being taught: "I gradually realized how important autonomy is for me - and at the same time how great the church's fear of this autonomy." Tzscheetzsch - who is a civil servant - could continue to teach church teaching at the University of Freiburg, but not at the theological faculty, and he was also no longer allowed to take exams for theology students. According to the Badischer Zeitung, the case is unique in that no teaching objection proceedings against Tzscheetzsch were carried out before the license to teach was withdrawn. Since the Baden Concordat was signed in 1932, no lecturer's license to teach in the Archdiocese of Freiburg has been revoked.
