Werner Wolffheim

Werner Joachim Wolffheim (born August 1, 1877 in Berlin ; † October 26, 1930 there ) was a German musicologist and collector who made a particular contribution to Bach research.

Life

After attending the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Berlin, he studied law in Munich and Berlin from 1895 to 1898 , as well as musicology with Adolf Sandberger and Oskar Fleischer . From 1899 he worked as a trainee lawyer, in 1903 as a court assessor, then as a lawyer at the Berlin Chamber of Commerce .

In 1906 he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD . From 1906 to 1909 he continued his music studies as a pupil with Hermann Kretzschmar , Johannes Wolf and Wilhelm Klatte . He wrote articles for the magazine of the International Music Society , the Allgemeine Musikzeitung and the magazine for aesthetics and general art history . In 1913 he organized the music department of the 1st Congress for Music Aesthetics in Berlin. He was 2nd chairman of the Association of German Music Critics and 1st Secretary of the Society for Aesthetics and General Art History .

From 1911 Wolffheim owned a large villa in Grunewald , Jagowstraße 12 (today Richard-Strauss-Straße 12, at the corner of Lassenstraße), which he had built by the architect Oskar Kaufmann . However, he had to sell the house as early as 1920 and later lived in Halensee , Johann-Georg-Straße 20, not far from Kurfürstendamm  - in the same house as the philosopher Salomo Friedlaender .

He also owned one of the world's most important music libraries, which he also had to dissolve and auction in 1928/29. Paul Hirsch acquired around 15,000 works from his collection .

He found his final resting place in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .

He was born with Betty Manheimer. Jacoby (born January 3, 1859; † 1942 in Berlin) married, the widow of the businessman Ferdinand Manheimer (1851-1905).
