Werner von Trapp

Werner von Trapp (born December 21, 1915 , Zell am See , Austria ; † October 11, 2007 in Waitsfield , Vermont ) was the second eldest son of Georg Ludwig von Trapp and Agathe Whitehead von Trapp. Together with his six siblings, his father and his stepmother Maria Augusta Trapp , he performed in the singing Trapp family .

Life

After studying music at the Mozarteum in Salzburg (cello) in the 1930s, he also learned composition and arrangement. He sang tenor in the family choir of the Trapp family. The Trapp family fled in 1938 after the annexation of Austria in the United States and began a successful career on the stage. After the family withdrew from the stage, von Trapp founded the Community School of Music in Reading , Pennsylvania .

Werner von Trapp became a naturalized American citizen and fought in the 10th Mountain Division for the US Army in Italy during World War II . He then became a dairy farmer in Waitsfield, Vermont .

He was portrayed by Michael Ande in the film The Trapp Family (1956) and The Trapp Family in America (1958) . In the Hollywood film My Songs - My Dreams ( The Sound of Music , 1965) Werner von Trapp was portrayed as the character Kurt von Duane Chase.

He lived with his wife, the Salzburg agricultural technician Erika von Trapp (January 16, 1922 - January 18, 2018), a childhood friend of his sister Martina, whom he married in 1948, together for 58 years and was the grandfather of Sofia, Melanie, Amanda and Justin, the current composition of the Trapp Family Singers , who played as The von Trapp Children and The von Trapps between 2001 and 2016 and often worked with Pink Martini .
