Westermark (Syke)

The Westermark is a 701.5 ha large forest area in the Lower Saxon town of Syke in Diepholz . It is located in the eastern area of the Wildeshauser Geest nature park and in the western and southwestern area of the core town of Syke. The terrain reaches a height of 58 meters.
Every year from mid-July to mid-August, the wild-growing orchid broad-leaved stendelwort ( Epipactis helleborine ) blooms in large numbers in this forest area .
Through the wooded area that gave its name to the “Zur Westermark” road in the Henstedt district of Syker , the L 340 road leads west to Nordwohlde and the L 333 south-west via Klein Bramstedt to Bassum . The Wanne-Eickel-Hamburg railway runs through the south-eastern part of the Westermark . The Twillbeeke, a left tributary of the Hache, flows on the southeastern edge .

In 1964, the forest area was designated as a landscape protection area (see list of landscape protection areas in the district of Diepholz ; therein: Westermark, LSG DH 00059).
When cyclone quimburga in 1972 (November 13), the forest was destroyed to a large extent, but since then reforested.
