Larry Schuba & Western Union is a German-speaking hit and country pop band from Berlin and Brandenburg .
history
Western Union was founded in 1966 as a hobby band in Berlin-Mariendorf . In 1967 Larry Schuba joined and took over the management of the group. They were inspired by the stars of American country music at the time such as Buck Owens , Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash , whose songs they initially played as a cover band in American and British military clubs as well as in youth homes and at arbor colony festivals.
In the 1970s the band had weekly appearances in Berlin's " Eierschale ", and they also played in other Berlin music clubs until 2004. During this time, Western Union was Gunter Gabriel's backing band for two years .
In 1981 Gunter Gabriel Western Union produced the first single at Hansa Records in Berlin Who loves lives longer / Try again with me , but broke off the production of the then producer during the recording for the second single I would like to go to Nashville the teens , Norman Ascot , continued.
In 1985, the band suffered a serious traffic accident on the way back from a concert in Warsaw , in which four of the band members were injured and the band bus was totally unusable.
In 1992 Schuba changed the entire line-up.
In 1999 Schuba and Western Union recorded the double album Country in Tails with the Babelsberg Film Orchestra. Bandleader Schuba developed the music show “From Graceland to Las Vegas” with Western Union, the German hit show “Die Wirtschaftswunderkinder” and a Christmas country show. In 2007 the band played several concerts for the 40th stage anniversary, in August of the same year the album Zeitreise was released .
Western Union disbanded on October 23, 2010.
Larry Schuba & Western Union have had a new line-up since January 2012.
Concerts and successes
In 1984 and 1985 the band won the German “Marlboro Country Music Competition” twice in a row. Concerts all over Europe and several times in the USA followed. In 1989 Western Union undertook a 14-day sold-out GDR tour and was the only German country band to give a concert in the Berlin Philharmonic. A live album of this concert was released on the UNDO Records label founded by Schuba.
This was followed by tours of Germany with Waylon Jennings and the Bellamy Brothers as opening act as well as concerts with the Highwaymen , Hank Williams Jr. , the Judds , Ricky Skaggs , George Strait , Kathy Mattea , Mel McDaniel and Moe Bandy , Asleep at the Wheel and Ronnie Milsap .
