The Papierbach diverts the water from the hillside springs and flows north of the outdoor pool into the Mindel

The Westernach is an almost 16 kilometer long stream in the Unterallgäu district, running roughly northwards. It arises at 671  m above sea level. NHN south of Grünegg from the right upper course Eßmühler Bach and the left, with 4.3 km both longer and 6.8 km² more catchment area Katzbruier Bach , whose source at about 730  m above sea level. NHN is located southeast of the small village of Hinterbuchenbrunn in Markt Rettenbach and is thus higher than that of the Eßmühler Bach.

At the middle course, a side arm Brunnenbach goes west of Apfeltrach from the Westernach to the right and flows out at about 607  m above sea level. NHN between Gernstall and Mindelheim from the left into the Mindel . The Brunnenbach was created about 200 years ago as a canal for a paper mill that no longer exists today at the level of today's Mindelheim outdoor pool, at that time it also took on the drainage of the so-called Seven Springs . At a later time, the course at today's nature teaching garden was separated - the Brunnenbach flows along the railway line south of the city into the Mindel, while the spring runoff from the slope flows into the Mindel via the so-called paper creek at the location of the paper mill north of the outdoor pool.

Between the separation of the Brunnenbach and the mouth of the Auerbach near Unterauerbach, the Westernach is dammed up to the Unggenrieder Weihern.

It finally empties at 578  m above sea level. NHN less than a kilometer below the Wiesmühle down the city of Mindelheim from the left into the Mindel.
