The Westernbach is a four-kilometer-long creek in the Hohenlohekreis in northern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the lower Ohrn from the right after running approximately south before the hamlet Möhrig in the urban area of Öhringen .

geography

course

The Westernbach arises next to the district road K 2330 connecting the villages of Pfahlbach and Westernbach in the municipality of Zweiflingen between the southern edge of the high forest Assig and Westernbach at about 277  m above sea level. NHN . At first it is a straight ditch in a valley that is only moderately deepened. All the way it goes south. It first crosses the northern settlement core of Westernbach, where a tributary that is only open in the local area joins from the right, followed by the stream from the Reisklinge in the settlement gap from the same direction. Even before the southern core of the settlement, its course takes on a more natural character for the first time with small meanders and a narrow strip of alluvial forest on the banks, which remains almost entirely after leaving the village.

Before the next village in the valley, the stream flows in from the Gänseklinge side valley on the right, and then the Häldenbächle from the village of Büttelbronn on the right on the slope . On this side, buildings on the slope continue down the valley to the mouth at about 216.9  m above sea level. NHN from the right into the lower Ohrn , a few dozen meters after it has flown under the Ohrntal bridge of the A 6 .

The Westernbach flows about 60 meters below its origin after a 4.2 km long run with an average bed gradient of 1.4 ‰.

Catchment area

The Westernbach has a catchment area of 6.4 km², which in terms of natural space lies in the sub-area of the Öhringer Plain of the Hohenloher and Haller Plains . It is located, small gussets on the western edge of the Ohrntalwald forest and the Assich forest in the north, excluding around one eighth of the total area, in an open hallway that is almost entirely under the plow away from the narrow valley areas and the villages.

The 327.8  m above sea level. NHN highest point is located in the far north in the Assich on the route of the Kärcherweg , a ridge path on the northern watershed to the Pfahlbach , which flows into the Kocher a little before the Ohrn that takes the Westernbach . The catchment area of the Maßholderbach , which flows into the Ohrn less than a hundred meters before the Westernbach, borders the left, eastern watershed almost to the mouth . Beyond the right watershed in the southwest and west lies the Ohrn, to which at most short waters flow.

About two thirds of the catchment area belong to the area of the municipality of Zweiflingen , the vast majority of it to the Westernbacher submarket. The remaining, southern part is in the urban area of Öhringen , mainly in the Büttelbronn district, near the mouth of the central Öhringen itself. On both sides of the upper stream are the two successive settlement parts of the village of Zweiflingen, Westernbach , to the right of it towards the end of the middle, the village of Öhringen Büttelbronn . This is followed by a newer settlement area on the right slope between Büttelbronn and the hamlet Möhrig , which is located a little further down the mouth of the Ohrn in the central Öhringen urban area and extends almost to the mouth. Otherwise the catchment area is uninhabited.

The route of the Upper German-Raetian Limes between Jagsthausen and Öhringen runs through the northeastern catchment area in a south-southeastern direction . On the northern edge of the Assich Forest, a remnant of a wall has been preserved on a section over 300 meters long. A little east of Westernbach there was a fort on the left slope of the valley on the Roman side, and a little southeast of there a winding field path following the route is marked on maps as a Roman road .

Mouth of the Westernbach from the right and last but not least northeast to about 216.9  m above sea level. NHN near the hamlet of Möhrig in the city of Öhringen from the right and north into the lower Ohrn . The Westernbach is 4.2 km long and drains a 6.4 km² area.

geology

The whole catchment area is in the Keuper . Only in a few islands on the eastern watershed is the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt Formation ) of the Unterkeuper . In the rest of the area, the highest tertiary layer is the gypsum keuper ( grave field formation ) of the Mittelkeuper immediately below . Loess sediment from Quaternary sedimentation is deposited on these two tertiary layers in large areas predominantly to the right of the stream . Shortly before Büttelbronn, a short, east-south-east trending disturbance stretches from the brook up the left slope of the valley. Some ravines have deepened in both the loess sediment and the Lettenkeuper.

Nature and protected areas

The Westernbach is initially a straight ditch in a natural hollow that can fall dry. Somewhat before the lower part of the Westernbach settlement begins, with the exception of this part of the village, the almost entirely natural section of the creek, which extends to the mouth. The brook flows there in many small meanders and is accompanied by a tree and bush gallery through the floodplain. The streambed is deepened up to two meters and up to two meters wide with changing depth and width. The sediment is earthy, some rust has also deposited small sand and gravel banks. Even before Büttelbronn, which keeps a little distance from the bank, the flow is constant.

The section of the Limes with the preserved wall in the Assig and its somewhat shorter continuation beyond the Lärcherweg are designated under the name Limes near Pfahlbach as a landscape protection area of only about 2 hectares . The Assigwald, the upper catchment area of the Häldenbächles west of Büttelbronn and the estuary from about the boundary between Büttelbronn and central Öhringen are both located in water protection areas .
