The hotel is characterized by its distinctive dome and the two-story "Villa la Cupola" suite is on the fifth and sixth floors below. This suite is considered one of the most expensive hotel rooms in the world and features hand-painted frescoes, up to seven bedrooms and its own cinema.
The Villa La Cupola Suite at USD 30,000 per night was listed by CNN as one of the ten most expensive suites in the world in March 2012 .

It was set up by the stock corporation for hotel companies based in Lucerne, Switzerland. They sold the hotel in 1920 to CIGA, the Compagnia Italiana Grandi Alberghi, or to Italian Grand Hotels Company, an Italian luxury chain. From June 4, 1944, the hotel was temporarily the headquarters of General Mark W. Clark
The Aga Khan IV bought CIGA in 1985 and sold it to Sheraton Hotels in 1994 , which added the Excelsior to their Luxury Collection. In 1998, Sheraton was sold to Starwood Hotels , and the Excelsior was transferred to the Westin Hotels division, which was renamed The Westin Excelsior, Rome. In 2000 the hotel was renovated. In 2015, Starwood sold the hotel to Katara Hospitality from Qatar for 222 million euros .
Asylum for Mohammad Reza Pahlavi
On August 11, 1953, at the time of the Abadan crisis , Mohammad Reza Pahlavi fled to Ramsar and from there to his summer residence in Kalardasht on the Caspian Sea . On August 12, Mohammad Mossadegh ordered the arrest of opposition politicians and the immediate leave of absence for generals and officers who were critical of him. On August 13, 1953, the Shah signed two decrees (farman) . With the first decree he ordered the removal of Mossadegh. With the second decree he appointed General Fazlollah Zahedi as the new Prime Minister. Colonel Nematollah Nassiri was to deliver the decrees to General Zahedi and Mossadegh. General Zahedi was an avowed opponent of Mossadegh. Mossadegh had been trying to arrest Zahedi for months.
On August 14th, Mossadegh announced that he wanted to dissolve parliament on the basis of the referendum held earlier. The formal request to the Shah to dissolve the parliament was made on August 15th. On the evening of August 15, Colonel Nassiri Mossadegh delivered the decree with his dismissal, which led to the immediate arrest of Nassiri. Mossadegh defied the Shah's orders. On August 16, 1953, the Shah learned of Nassiri's arrest, sat down with his wife Soraya in a small Beech Aircraft Corporation sports machine at the airport in Ramsar , the ambassador Mozaffar Alam flew to Baghdad and, as instructed, stayed away from the Shah Shah suspected that he would pursue his arrest and continued his escape after three days to Rome and quarters with Allen Welsh Dulles from August 18 to 20, 1953 at the Hotel Excelsior. The Iranian Chargé d'affaires in Rome Khadje Noury was at the Lido di Ostia for summer vacation , the Shah had a Rolls-Royce Phantom IV in Rome and the Chargé d'Affaires had the key. The Embassy Secretary Abdollah Khosrovi chauffeured the Shah.
Film hostel and location
In 1959, the hotel hosted the movie stars during Ben-Hur's shooting days in Rome . Sweet Life was filmed in the hotel in 1960 and Two Weeks in Another City was filmed in the hotel in 1962. Portions of the 1983 miniseries The Firestorm were filmed in the hotel, as was a scene in the 2009 period of the musical film Nine . In the 1973 film The Exorcist , Chris MacNeil (played by Ellen Burstyn ) can be heard asking to be connected to the Hotel Excelsior in Rome when she tries to contact Regan's (played by Linda Blair ) father.
At the beginning of March 1994 the In Utero tour was interrupted by Kurt Cobain because he was unable to work . Cobain and his wife Courtney Love flew to Rome on March 2nd and stayed in a suite at the Excelsior Hotel. Cobain was admitted to Policlinico Umberto I on March 4, 1994 - lying in a coma . Cobain explained the process as an accidental medication wrong with sedatives and alcohol .
