Asylum for Mohammad Reza Pahlavi

On August 11, 1953, at the time of the Abadan crisis , Mohammad Reza Pahlavi fled to Ramsar and from there to his summer residence in Kalardasht on the Caspian Sea . On August 12, Mohammad Mossadegh ordered the arrest of opposition politicians and the immediate leave of absence for generals and officers who were critical of him. On August 13, 1953, the Shah signed two decrees (farman) . With the first decree he ordered the removal of Mossadegh. On August 14th, Mossadegh announced that he wanted to dissolve parliament on the basis of the referendum held earlier. The formal request to the Shah to dissolve the parliament was made on August 15th. On the evening of August 15, Colonel Nassiri Mossadegh delivered the decree with his dismissal, which led to the immediate arrest of Nassiri. Mossadegh defied the Shah's orders. On August 16, 1953, the Shah learned of Nassiri's arrest, sat down with his wife Soraya in a small Beech Aircraft Corporation sports machine at the airport in Ramsar , the ambassador Mozaffar Alam flew to Baghdad and, as instructed, stayed away from the Shah Shah suspected that he would pursue his arrest and continued his escape after three days to Rome and quarters with Allen Welsh Dulles from August 18 to 20, 1953 at the Hotel Excelsior. Portions of the 1983 miniseries The Firestorm were filmed in the hotel, as was a scene in the 2009 period of the musical film Nine . In the 1973 film The Exorcist , Chris MacNeil (played by Ellen Burstyn ) can be heard asking to be connected to the Hotel Excelsior in Rome when she tries to contact Regan's (played by Linda Blair ) father.

At the beginning of March 1994 the In Utero tour was interrupted by Kurt Cobain because he was unable to work . Cobain and his wife Courtney Love flew to Rome on March 2nd and stayed in a suite at the Excelsior Hotel. Cobain was admitted to Policlinico Umberto I on March 4, 1994 - lying in a coma .
