The area Western Riesrand is with regulation from 1 January 2005 by the Stuttgart Regional Council after the Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna and Habitats Directive) be trained reserve (reserve identifier DE-7128-341) to the east of the German federal state of Baden -Wuerttemberg .

The approximately 417 hectare (ha) large protected area "Westlicher Riesrand" belongs to the natural areas Albuch and Härtsfeld , Eastern Alb foreland and Riesalb . Its fifteen sub-areas are at an average altitude of 486 m above sea level. NN and extend on the western edge of the Nördlinger Ries in the four municipalities

description
The protected area “Westlicher Riesrand” is described as a “small-scale, hilly cultural landscape with four caves, striking heather mountains on the western edge of the Nördlinger Ries, close intermeshing of juniper heaths, fields, meadows and hedges and balms on the Goldberg”.
Protection purpose
The main protective purpose is the preservation of the Griesbuckell landscape of the Nördlinger Ries meteorite impact with large deposits of limestone grasslands, juniper heaths, limestone pioneer grasslands, limestone cliffs with crevice vegetation and lowland hay meadows, caves and the freshwater limestone rock Goldberg .
Habitats
The diversity of dry and moist habitat types in the protected area is described, among other things, with "juniper heaths", "lime pioneer lawns", "species-rich bristle grass lawns", "limestone cliffs with crevice vegetation", "caves" and "lean flatland hay meadows".

Contiguous protected areas
The FFH area “Westlicher Riesrand” includes the nature reserves “ Blasienberg ” (1,179), “ Goldberg ” (1,034) and “ Riegelberg ” (1,172) as well as the landscape protection areas “ Ipf with blister mountain and Reimersbergle ” (1.36,001) and “ landscape parts at the edge of the river Ries ”(1.36.039) as contiguous protected areas.
