history

prehistory

The crossing of the weather cross was already in the time BC. It was used because the two Celtic highways Main-Neckar and Spessart-Hohenlohe met at this location . A sacrificial stone in the nearby "Heidenkessel" was probably of Celtic origin and part of a former cult site.

History of the weather cross

The weather cross was erected in 1714 as an "eternal memory" of major storm damage and is now shown on many hiking maps. Its pedestal formed the boundary stone to the former districts of the five old communities ( Distelhausen , Dittigheim , Dittwar , Lauda and Oberlauda ), whose coats of arms are depicted on it. After the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg , some of the neighboring old communities are only districts and Dittigheim is no longer a direct neighbor. The weather cross was created by a sculptor from Grünsfeld . In 1849 the weather cross was renovated. After one of the two chestnut trees that frame the weather cross did not survive a storm in 2011, a new chestnut tree was planted in the same place.
