Whale was a Swedish rock band from Stockholm that was active between 1993 and 1999. The group combined alternative rock with influences from grunge , trip-hop and electronic dance music .

Band history

The band was founded in 1993 by guitarist Henrik Schyffert, bassist Gordon Cyrus and singer Cia Berg. That same year, the band's international breakthrough with the successful single Hobo Humpin 'Slobo Babe , that of Mark Pellington twisted music video had a long time among the top hits of the extremely popular in the 1990s show Alternative Nation on MTV Networks Europe . The single placed in the top ten in Denmark and Norway and reached chart positions in the Netherlands , Switzerland and Great Britain and came to position 24 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Charts.

The 1995 album We Care , on which two tracks were co-produced by former Massive Attack member Tricky , reached position 42 in the UK album charts. It contained another title, Pay for Me , the music video of which was included in the MTV rotation . Also in 1995 Whale released a cover version of the Prince song Darling Nikki from his album Purple Rain . Whale went on tour through North America as opening act for Blur , after which founding member Cyrus left the band. It was not until 1998 that another album appeared with All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones , now with the new band members Jorgen Wall on drums, guitarist Jon Jefferson Klingberg and bassist Heikki Kiviaho. The album was extensively produced in Chicago and London by Chris Potter and Brad Wood, among others , and like the previous one, it was able to place itself in the British album charts. The band then completed a US tour as a support act for Tricky as a promotion.

On their website, the band stated that they were founded as Southern Whale Cult in 1987 . However, it was a joke. The band broke up in the late 1990s. Henrik Schyffert has been a comedian since then, while Cia Berg works as a presenter for Swedish television. Gordon Cyrus works as a music producer .
