What a Long Strange Trip It's Been is the second greatest hits compilation by the band Grateful Dead .
history
After the contract with Warner Bros. Records expired and Grateful Dead had its own label, Grateful Dead Records , Warner Bros. was still allowed to release old material from the time of the contract.
Originally planned as a double album , it was published as an album of four with recordings from 1967–1972.
The name of the album comes from the song Truckin ' by Robert Hunter and one of the most famous lines in rock history: “ Lately it occurs to me: What a long, strange trip it's been. “This line has also been used as the title or subtitle of books, magazines, and articles. B. the anniversary edition for the twentieth birthday of Rolling Stone named after and it has its own entry in the book Skeleton Key: A Dictionary for Deadheads
In addition to truckin ' , the figurehead of the Grateful Dead was used: Dark Star . Dark Star is considered the best song Hunter wrote for the Grateful Dead and was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 most important songs in rock history . The song was also used in a shortened form in the Zabriskie Point soundtrack . In addition, the song was covered more often, including by David Murray , Beck and Mike Oldfield . According to the All Music Guide, there are 81 covers, with a large number of band members.
As with their first albums, the band used the pseudonym McGannahan Skyjellyfetti to mark songs that were jointly created within the band. The name was based on a character from Kenneth Patchen's work Memoirs of a Shy Pornographer .
After Grateful Dead, after a six-year hiatus, released the album In the Dark in 1987 and Built to Last in 1989 , which again enjoyed great success, Warner Bros. also re-released What a Long Strange Trip It's Been on CD.

In the Billboard Charts , the album only reached number 121. On August 24, 2001, the album reached gold and platinum status .
