Janette Oke: The Coal Valley Saga (Original title: When Calls the Heart ) is an American Western - television series based on the eponymous book in the original series of the Canadian author Janette Oke based. In October 2013, the first two-hour television film When Love Wins - Departure to the West was broadcast, from which the series later emerged. It premiered on January 11, 2014 on the Hallmark Channel . The German-language first broadcast took place on January 6, 2015 on the TV channel Bibel TV . The video-on-demand provider Netflix published all 4 old seasons from 2017 and showed the new episodes with the 5th season from February 1, 2019 before the TV broadcast.

The series focuses on the young Elizabeth Thatcher, who moves to the small town of Coal Valley in 1910. Driven by the desire to prove her independence to her wealthy family, she accepted a position as a teacher in the city. At first, this step is far from easy for them. Only when she finds the hidden diary of her deceased aunt Elizabeth and uses it as a guide for her new life does it get a little easier for her. Elizabeth quickly learns to get everyone in town on her side except Constable Jack Thornton. The law enforcement officer is convinced that Elizabeth's father is jointly responsible for his transfer to the provincial nest because he wanted his daughter to be well guarded. For Jack, the job is initially an unwelcome career impasse. Only when the two fall in love does his attitude change; in addition, over time he has grown fond of the people of Coal Valley.

Production and broadcast
When Calls the Heart is filmed in a vineyard field in south Vancouver . The fictional border town "Coal Valley" was built in autumn 2013. In this film sets the series Hell on Wheels reused. Filming of the first season ended on February 22, 2014.
The broadcast of the first season began on January 11th and ended on March 29th, 2014. In May 2014, the series was extended by a seven-part second season. They aired between April 25, 2015 and June 13, 2015. In addition to the feature-length opening episode shown on December 26, 2015, the third season includes eight regular episodes that were shown between February 21, 2016 and April 10, 2016. The order for a fourth season was confirmed in April 2016.
The German-language first broadcast has been on the TV channel Bibel TV since January 6, 2015 .
