Whirinaki is a small settlement in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The settlement is located around 8 km southwest of Rawene and around 8 km northeast of Opononi on the Whirinaki River , which flows into Hokianga Harbor around 6 km north-northwest . The New Zealand State Highway 12 runs through the settlement, which connects it with the places on the west coast of the Tasman Sea and to the east with Kaikohe , some 32 km away .

history

The area was invaded by Te Roroa in 1810 or 1811 during the Musket Wars . All residents of the nearby village of Opara were killed.

Education

With the Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Tonga o Hokianga, the settlement has a composite school with grades 1 to 15. In 2014, 106 students attended the school, which is a Kura Kaupapa Māori school, which is entirely in the Māori language is taught. By the early mid-20th century, there was already a school for Māori in the settlement, the Whirinaki Native School .
