John Whitney "Whit" Stillman (born January 25, 1952 in Washington, DC ) is an American film director , author and film producer , who received international recognition, in particular for his debut film Metropolitan - Damn, bourgeois, in love (1990).

biography

After attending school, he studied at Harvard University , graduated in 1973 and then worked as a journalist in Manhattan , New York City . During a stay in Barcelona he met his Spanish wife and married her shortly afterwards. There he met a film producer from Madrid and convinced them to sell their films to Spanish-speaking TV channels in the USA . For the next five years he worked as a sales agent in Barcelona and Madrid for the directors Fernando Trueba and Fernando Colomoand also played roles in their films such as a strange American in Trueba's film Sal Gorda (1984) or in Colomos La línea del cielo (1984).

Between 1984 and 1988 he worked on the script for Metropolitan while also running an illustration agency in New York City. In 1990, he filmed Metropolitan and financed the film by selling his apartment for 50,000 dollars as well as financial contributions from friends and relatives.

The film became a great success and won the Critics' Award at the Deauville American Film Festival in 1990, the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Film in 1990 and was nominated for the Best Picture Award, which Grifters received from Stephen Frears . The film also received a Silver Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival , where it was also nominated for a Golden Leopard . Stillman also received the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best New Director and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay at the 1991 Academy Awards. At Sundance Film Festival was Metropolitan nominated for the award for best drama.

In 1994 he made the film Barcelona , inspired by his own stay in Spain , which was also his first film financed by a production company. The film The Last Days of Disco (1998) was based on his travels and experiences in various nightclubs in Manhattan such as Studio 54 .

He wrote the script and also directed the film Damsels in Distress starring Adam Brody , Analeigh Tipton and Megalyn Echikunwoke , which was released in September 2011, as well as the 2016 Jane Austen film adaptation of Love & Friendship .
