history

The Bucksbaum Award has been given to an artist in the exhibition since 2000 .

In 2002 the Whitney Biennial consisted of an official exhibition with a net art department devoted to digital art , curated by Christiane Paul , and a WhitneyBiennial.com website . Christiane Paul summarized the net art shown as follows:

“Internet-based art has developed into a broad medium and defined new artistic practices: narrative and time-based work, network activism / hacktivism , telerobotics and the redefinition of browser conventions. The selection of the Biennale is intended to give an impression of the diversity of net art and to point to topics that have arisen over the years: data visualization and linking, database aesthetics, paradigms of computer games , networked communities, agent technologies, nomadic devices. "

In 2006 the exhibition was curated by Chrissie Iles and Philippe Vergne, in 2008 the curators were Henriette Huldisch and Shamim M. Momin. It took place in the Park Avenue Armory.

In 2010 the biennale took place on the lower three floors of the museum, curated by Francesco Bonami and Garry Carrion-Murayari.

The 76th Biennale, which is open for three months until May 27, 2012, was curated by the art historian Elisabeth Sussman , who is otherwise responsible for photography at Whitney, together with the author and former art gallery owner Jay Sanders . This time the focus was on performance and generally on the performing arts of dance, music and theater. "Action" took place on an entire floor at all times of the day, the others were reserved for traditional forms. The total of 51 participating artists and groups included the indie rock band Red Krayola and the filmmaker Frederick Wiseman . The filmmaker Werner Herzog showed a video installation in which twenty fantastic landscapes by the Dutch painter and etcher Hercules Seghers were the focus.

“Artists are tired of the old categories of minimalism , post-minimalism, conceptual art . They want to break through borders and look for interesting figures in the sidewalks of art history in which they recognize their ancestors. "

- Elisabeth Sussman
