The Wienerwaldsee is a shallow reservoir, 20 km west of Vienna .

location

It is located on the West Autobahn in a hollow at the fork in the valley between the municipal areas of Purkersdorf , Tullnerbach and Pressbaum . The Wien River and the Wolfsgrabenbach, which flows into the Vienna here, serve as tributaries . So the reservoir was initially called Wolfsgraben Reservoir .

history

The first plans were made in 1781 by the architect Wilhelm Bayer . When it was built between 1895 and 1897, the lake was only used as a service water reservoir , and until recently as a drinking water reservoir for the Wiental water pipeline of the Wiental waterworks . The content of the basin, which is created by a 240 meter long and 13 meter high dam, was 1,430,000 cubic meters at the time. It was built as well as a detention basin for the often highly water-bearing Vienna. The lake still fulfills this purpose. The area around the lake is a water protection area .

Monument by Wilhelm Kress

The monument to Wilhelm Kress is on the northern bank, at the parking lot of the federal road near the weir . He had an accident here on October 3, 1901, during a test drive on the water with his seaplane , which was hit by a gust of wind during a turn shortly before the dam, dipped its wings into the water and sank. Kress was not injured in this incident.

Water protection area

The Wienerwaldsee, which is no longer used as a water reservoir, is still a water protection area and is still maintained by the MA31 of the municipality of Vienna (waterworks). Swimming is prohibited in summer, as is ice skating in winter.

Accordingly, both the lake and the banks are inhabited by rare animals. Pike , pikeperch , carp and tench are the most common fish . The critically endangered dice snake also finds a habitat here. The birds that should be mentioned are the gray heron , the great crested grebe , the coot , the moorhen and the little ringed plover . Even the beaver , which has settled here several times but whose habitat has been disturbed, is now a permanent resident and can already be found up the Vienna River.
