Wiktor Osiatyński

Wiktor Osiatyński (born February 6, 1945 in Białystok , † April 29, 2017 in Warsaw ) was a Polish legal scholar , sociologist and civil rights activist .

Career

Osiatyński studied law and sociology at the University of Warsaw , received a doctorate in sociology and a habilitation in law.

In the 1990s he headed the Research Center for Constitutionalism in Eastern Europe in Chicago . In 1995 he was appointed professor at the Central European University in Budapest . In 2017 the Chair for Human Rights was named with his name.

He has lectured at the University of Connecticut , University of Siena , Stanford University , Columbia University, and Harvard University .

Osiatyński was a member of the Political Science Committee at the Polish Academy of Sciences and was involved in drafting the Polish Constitution in 1997 .

He was a member of the Helsinki Foundation's Program Council for Human Rights. He dealt with the problems of alcoholism, was himself dependent on alcohol at times, which he openly admitted.

As part of the Stephan Báthory Foundation , he founded the Commission for Education on Alcoholism. He also supported the movement for women's rights. He conducted interviews “Understanding the World” with interesting people on Tok-FM radio.
