The torrent is a brook in the Oberallgäu district . It is a tributary of the Hirschbach in the Bad Hindelang municipality in Bavaria.

geography

The source stream of the torrent is the Gundbach, which rises along with numerous other streams on the northern slopes of the Iseler . The most important of these streams are the Ochsenbergbach and the Gsendbach, which drain the pastures of Ochsenberg and Wiedhagen. From the village of Oberjoch onwards , the brook is called a torrent. It now flows through the steep Wildbachtobel 300 meters down into the Ostrachtal . There, it flows through Bad Oberdorf , before he in Hirschbach grove empties into the Hirschbach. This flows one kilometer further into the Ostrach.

history

As early as 1641 it was ordered that the people living near the torrent should take precautions against flooding. Sixteen flood events have been counted since 1680, some of which caused catastrophic damage in Bad Oberdorf after melting snow or heavy rain. In 1695 the villagers made a vow to seek protection from the village patron, Jodoku. Since then, a Bach holiday has been celebrated in the village around January 25th with a church service and a procession. After another flood in 1851, the expansion of the previously unregulated stream bed began. The river bed was lowered and the banks were fortified for the first time. Nevertheless, there were further floods in 1901 and 1924. The danger of flooding was only averted after a further expansion from 1976 to 1978. The stream from the lower reaches of the Wildbachtobel was partly channeled or provided with dams. On the southern outskirts of Bad Oberdorf, the Schanzpark, through which the torrent flows, was created with a Kneipp facility and concert pavilion. In the park there is a memorial stone to the flood events and the expansion of the stream for flood protection.
