The Knüll Wildlife Park is a 50 hectare wildlife park opened in 1968 on the edge of the Knüll Mountains in the Schwalm-Eder district , Hesse ( Germany ). It is part of the Schwalm-Eder company.

Geographical location

The Knüll Wildlife Park is located in northern Hesse on the northern foothills of the Knüll Mountains in the Rinnebach valley . It is located in the area of the town of Homberg (Efze) above the Rodemann district . The northern center of the area is the wooded Streuflingkopf  (approx.  413  m above sea  level ), on which there is also a wooden observation tower. The wildlife park is not far from the federal highway 7 .

history

Brown bears

After initial planning in 1964, in August 1965, at the suggestion of District Administrator August Franke , the then Fritzlar-Homberg district decided to set up a game gate at Streuflingskopf on a 37 hectare forest area in Hesse. The opening of the Knüll Wildlife Park by the Hessian Agriculture Minister Tassilo Tröscher took place on June 1, 1968 with 28 domestic animals such as fallow deer , red deer , roe deer , mouflon and dwarf goats, whereby the free-roaming animals of various species of deer and wild sheep are a special feature. Despite the opening times only on weekends at the time, the 100,000 visitors came to the 58 animals after 13 months.

In 1979 the district was able to take over the state-owned area of 36 ha. The area, which has now been enlarged to 50 hectares, is home to almost 450 animals from 40 species. In the first 50 years the wildlife park had more than 3.3 million visitors, currently (as of 2018) the annual number of visitors is 70,000 with an extensive range of extracurricular environmental education. Significant progress was made in 1979 with the establishment of the tarpan and bison enclosure. The tarpans are also used today to maintain the landscape of an old hut forest in the Waltersberg nature reserve near Knüllwald- Rengshausen , and the bison enclosure has been abandoned. In 1991 the petting zoo was built , and in 1993 for the 25th anniversary the construction of the first lynx enclosure , which was newly created in 2008. Before that, the communal facility for brown bears and wolves was inaugurated on 7000 square meters in 2007. The spring courtyard will follow in 2011, a new owl aviary in 2014 and the raccoon and enok enclosure in 2018 .

structure

The facility is looked after by full-time management and a team of 15 freelancers, particularly in the field of environmental education, for which the "Tiergarten with Educational Seal" certificate was awarded by the German Wildlife Park Association in 2014. Support is provided by a development association and animal sponsors.

As a zoo - in the sense of the European zoo directive - the wildlife park has repeatedly participated in species protection projects. For example, eagle owl breeding was given to reintroduction programs and bison were bred.

The restauration takes place in the Jagdbaude restaurant in the entrance area next to the information center, which also offers conference facilities. The paths in the area are four kilometers long. The wildlife park is located on several hiking trails such as the Löwenweg , the wildlife park trail leads around the outside of the site.
