Wilfried Mommert

Wilfried Mommert (born December 22, 1944 in Nauen ) is a German journalist . For decades until 2009 he shaped the cultural reporting of the German press agency dpa from Berlin. His articles have appeared in numerous media and are used by editorial offices nationwide as a basis for research.

Mommert came from Nauen to what was then West Berlin in 1950 and ended up in a gym in the Berlin-Staaken reception camp . He later completed a three-year apprenticeship as a publishing clerk at Ullstein-Verlag . In 1968 he became a trainee at the German Press Agency in Berlin. In 1969 he became an editor, two years later he became an "executive editor".

His first subjects were the assassination attempt on student leader Rudi Dutschke and a report on Alexanderplatz (then East Berlin) , on which the television tower was completed. Mommert writes mainly on cultural-political issues in Berlin. He also rescensed performances in what was then East Berlin, such as in the Deutsches Theater , Berliner Ensemble , Maxim Gorki Theater , in the Volksbühne or in the Komische Oper . With his countless reports about Herbert von Karajan , Johannes Heesters , the Red Army faction , Benno Ohnesorg , Christoph Schlingensief and Walter Jens , he achieved enormous publicity. Mommert always interprets the concept of culture generously; it also includes social and political aspects.

In 2006 he received the puk journalist award for his work, the award of the newspaper of the German Cultural Council “politics and culture”. In the laudation given by the then chairman of the “Culture in Germany” commission of inquiry, Gitta Connemann, it was said: “With his reporting on cultural policy, he has a major impact on the German media landscape ...
