Guglielmo Borremans
Guglielmo Borremans (* 1672 in Antwerp , † 1724 in Palermo ; called Fiammingo ) was a Flemish painter who developed his main activity in Campania , Calabria and Sicily .
Life
Under the name Wilhelm Borremans, he was registered in 1688/1689 as an apprentice to the Antwerp painter Pieter van Lint . Shortly after 1700 he went to Italy. 1704–1706 he is documented in Calabria, where he created panel paintings and frescoes . A stay in Naples followed . There he dealt in particular with the works of Luca Giordano and Paolo De Matteis . Around 1715 he settled in Palermo.
Here he developed his own style from a combination of his Flemish education and the artistic knowledge gained in Naples.
His unmistakable artistic expression and his high level of craftsmanship quickly made him one of the most popular painters in Sicily, whose frescoes can be found in numerous churches all over the island.
His son Luigi and the grandson Guglielmo d. J. were also active as painters in Sicily.
