Wilhelm Brandes (born February 8, 1874 in Bodenburg , † March 19, 1944 in Wesermünde ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ).

biography

After attending elementary school in Bodenburg, Brandes completed an apprenticeship as a shoemaker and then went hiking . He first worked as a shoemaker, later changed his profession and took up a job as a port worker, which he carried out until 1911. In September 1898 he joined the union. From April 1911 to 1933 he was initially the full-time cashier of the transport workers' association and then managing director of the transport association in Bremerhaven .

Brandes joined the SPD in October 1894. From 1908 to 1923 he was chairman of the SPD in Geestemünde and from 1910 to 1933 chairman of the SPD constituency organization Hanover 18 and the SPD sub-district. After the November Revolution he was a member of the workers' council of Geestemünde. He was a city ​​councilor in Geestemünde from 1919 to 1924 and was elected mayor there. From 1924 to 1933 he was a city councilor in Wesermünde. From 1925 to 1928 he was a member of the Hanover Provincial Parliament . On September 13, 1921, he succeeded in becoming a member of the Prussian Landtag , to which he belonged continuously until 1933. After the National Socialists came to power, he was briefly taken into " protective custody " in June 1933 .
