Wilhelm Diepenbach

Wilhelm Albert Diepenbach (born June 21, 1887 in Mainz ; † June 19, 1961 there ) was a German archivist , librarian and historian .

Life

Diepenbach attended the old grammar school in Mainz, where he passed his Abitur in 1905. He then studied law , history , German studies , classical philology and art history at the universities of Heidelberg , Bonn , Lausanne , Strasbourg and Giessen . On October 1, 1913 he was a trainee teacher, two years later an assessor . In 1919 he continued his scientific career at the University of Giessen. There he earned his doctorate at May 23, 1921 at Anton Friedrich Vigener to Dr. phil.

In 1915 Diepenbach became head of the coin cabinet of the Mainz City Library . On April 16, 1919, Diepenbach took up the post of auxiliary librarian in the Mainz city library. A year later he was listed there as a librarian. On June 1, 1925 Diepenbach received the title of senior archivist and six years later was appointed senior archivist. As early as 1929 he took over the position of deputy director of the Mainz City Library. On July 1, 1950, he was appointed director of the city library and city ​​archives as the successor to his predecessor Aloys Ruppel . Diepenbach managed both facilities until his retirement on June 30, 1956.

At the beginning of his activity, one focus of his scientific activity was the initial organization and supervision of the coin cabinet.
