Eugen Hartmann was the son of a teacher, did an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic in Ulm and helped prepare the world exhibition in Vienna in 1873 . Afterwards he was the technical assistant of the physicist Wilhelm Eduard Weber at the Physics Institute of the University of Göttingen . Here he continued his autodidactic training. In 1879 he started his own business in Würzburg, where he manufactured measuring instruments for Prof. Friedrich Wilhelm Kohlrausch for his electrical precision measurements. The spring galvanometer and the mirror galvanometer with telescope reading emerged from this collaboration .

He recognized the increasing importance of electrical engineering and in 1881 took over the German representation of the American Bell Telephone Company (later part of AT&T ). In 1884, together with the businessman Wunibald Braun, he founded the Hartmann & Braun company in Frankfurt am Main for the construction of telephone systems, sales of high-voltage machines and the manufacture of electrical measuring instruments.

Eugen Hartmann sponsored the Physikalischer Verein and contributed to the establishment of the first electrotechnical college. From 1900 until his death in 1915 he was chairman of the association several times. He is also one of the founders of the Electrotechnical Association, which was established in Berlin on December 20, 1879 and which became the VDE 14 years later . In 1901 the Prussian government appointed him professor. The TH Stuttgart awarded him the Dr.-Ing. honorary .

Honors / nominations

In his honor, the Eugen Hartmann Prize is awarded for the best work by a young scientist in the field of measurement and control technology and for the promotion of young talent in the field of automation technology. A street in "Eugen-Hartmann-Straße" is named after him on the former premises of the Hartmann & Braun company (today a public street) in the Praunheim district of Frankfurt .
