Wilhelm Feuerlein

Wilhelm Feuerlein (born October 11, 1920 in Nuremberg ; † December 22, 2015 in Munich ) was a German psychiatrist and addiction researcher. In the last decades of the 20th century he was regarded as an outstanding researcher of alcoholism in Germany.

Life

Wilhelm Feuerlein was born in Nuremberg in 1920 and grew up in Coburg. In 1939 he began to study human medicine in Munich and moved to the University of Vienna in 1941 . During the Second World War he had to interrupt his studies to serve as a medic. He was captured by the British near Lübeck, from which he was released in 1945.

In 1948, Feuerlein finished his studies at the University of Erlangen . Until his retirement he was head of the Psychiatric Polyclinic of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. Feuerlein was a founding member and first president of the German Society for Addiction Research and Addiction Therapy, newly founded in 1978. From 1971 to 1974 he was a member of the Psychiatry Enquete Commission of the German Bundestag on the state of psychiatry in the Federal Republic and from 1986 to 1989 Temporary Advisor to the WHO .

Feuerlein wrote standard works on the diagnosis and treatment of alcohol addiction for doctors, psychologists and social workers.

Wilhelm Feuerlein research award

The Wilhelm Feuerlein Research Prize is awarded by the Oberberg Foundation Matthias Gottschaldt for excellent contributions to addiction research. The work can come from the fields of psychotherapy , psychosomatics , psychiatry , neurology , psychology , biochemistry , neurobiology , pharmacology as well as prevention and rehabilitation research .

The prize is awarded every two years and is awarded by the chairwoman of the foundation, Edda Gottschaldt, on the recommendation of an independent board of trustees . It is divided into one work each from basic research or population epidemiology and from application or clinical research (including care epidemiology). It is considered the most important award in the German-speaking area in the field of addiction research and addiction therapy.
