Wilhelm Friedrich Otto Bánkowski von Frugnoni (born May 27, 1867 in Kolomea in Galicia , † March 24, 1932 in Vienna ) was a Lieutenant Field Marshal in the Austro-Hungarian Army .

career

1884 graduated from the military high school Mährisch-Weißkirchen; retired as a lieutenant in the police battalion Kopal No. 10 in St. Pölten; 1894 after graduating from war school, captain in the General Staff Corps , later Chief of Staff of the kk 21st Landwehr Infantry Division of the VIII Army Corps; 1907 Troop service in the kk Landwehr Infantry Regiment No. 6. On November 19, 1910 promoted to Colonel in the General Staff Corps and appointed commander of the kk Landwehr information course for captains and Rittmeister of the troop service.

First World War

During the First World War he first served as major general and commander of the 56th Mountain Brigade and section commander of Subrayon V in the national defense of Tyrol . In this area he distinguished himself with great skill despite inadequate training of the soldiers, general shortage of supplies and the extremely adverse conditions. He achieved several defensive successes, including in the area around Monte Piano and Monte Cristallo , both of which were subsequently taken by Austrian forces . During a visit to the front, he was seriously wounded and temporarily had to surrender his command to Lieutenant Field Marshal Ludwig Goiginger . Because of his abilities he was promoted to field marshal lieutenant and served under Colonel General Viktor Dankl until his replacement after the South Tyrol offensive in 1916. He ended the war as a representative of the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Defense in the War Material Recovery Office. He retired on January 1, 1919.

Under his command and later governor of Upper Austria, served Heinrich Gleißner as an ensign . The well-known mountain guide and Tyrolean rifleman Sepp Innerkofler was also active as a scout and observer in the Three Peaks region.
