Wilhelm Fuchs (mining scientist)

Christian Wilhelm Fuchs (born August 1, 1802 in Leutschau ; † January 28, 1853 in Belgrade ) was an Austrian mining scientist .

Fuchs was born as the son of the high school professor in Leutschau and later superintendent in Lemberg Johann Samuel Fuchs (1770-1817). He received his doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1829 as Dr. phil. (Chemistry). After Fuchs completed studies at the Bergakademie Schemnitz in 1833 and 1834 , he trained further with the mountain tester in Schmöllnitz and then became a mountain official in Agordo . In 1837 he applied unsuccessfully for the professorship of chemistry, mineralogy and metallurgy at the Bergakademie Schemnitz, but was finally appointed chief smelter in Schemnitz in 1844. Since Fuchs was involved in the events of 1848 , he was removed from his position in 1849. From 1851 to 1853 he was in charge of mining in Serbia.

From 1849 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

During his time in Vienna, Fuchs was temporarily a guest of Joseph Franz von Jacquin . Together with Ladislaus von Kralovanszky, he was the editor of the unfinished Flora Schneebergensis . Fuchs also collected fossils and published in the fields of paleontology, geology, and stratigraphy.
