Life

He was introduced to the natural sciences very early on by his father, Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin . He studied medicine in Vienna, where he obtained his doctorate in 1788. Between 1788 and 1791, commissioned by Emperor Joseph II , he undertook a research trip to Germany, France and England. As was customary at the time, he inherited his father's chair as professor of botany and chemistry at the University of Vienna , which he held from 1797 until his retirement in 1838. In 1834 Emperor Franz entrusted him with the supervision of the Imperial Garden in Belvedere Palace, which had been established for Austrian flora . In 1820 he was honored with the title of a councilor and in 1838 with the Knight's Cross of the Order of St. Stephen. From 1808 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1820 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1830 he became an honorary member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

The Jacquin family were friends with Mozart , who composed the Kegelstatt Trio (KV 498) and the four-hand piano sonata KV 521 for Joseph Franz's sister Franziska . For himself Mozart wrote z. B. Mente ti lascio, o figlia (KV 513). Jacquin married the then famous piano amateur and Mozart student Babette Natorp and led a musical circle with her.
