Wilhelm Ferdinand Maria Gorton (born December 1, 1922 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ; † August 25, 2016 in Strasbourg , Carinthia ) was an Austrian industrialist , politician and large landowner as well as an honorary citizen of the Carinthian city of Strasbourg.

Life

Childhood and youth

Wilhelm Gorton was born on December 1, 1922 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. He grew up as the eldest of three children of his parents Wilhelm Gorton and Josefine Gorton geb. Nagele (1900–1985) in Strasbourg in Carinthia . His father was a large landowner , businessman and businessman .

Political activity

Gorton was from 1951 to 1961 city ​​councilor of the municipality of Strasbourg in Carinthia and from 1961 mayor of the city of Strasbourg. From 1965 to 1970 he was a member of the Carinthian state parliament . Following this, he switched to federal politics and was a member of the Austrian National Council from March 31, 1970 to December 16, 1986 . In January 1985, Gorton received severe public criticism when he accepted Walter Reder in Carinthia. Reder was a Nazi war criminal , was arrested in May 1945 and then spent almost 40 years in prison.
