Wilhelm I (Hesse)
Wilhelm I of Hesse , "the Elder" (* July 4, 1466 , † February 8, 1515 in Spangenberg Castle ) was Landgrave of the Landgraviate of Hesse .
Life
His parents were Ludwig the Franklin (1438–1471) and Mechthild, daughter of Count Ludwig I of Württemberg . Under the influence of his mother, Wilhelm turned to religious interests early on. After his uncle and guardian, Heinrich III. von Oberhessen , died in 1483, Wilhelm took over the business of government himself. In 1488 he married Anna von Braunschweig (1460–1520), daughter of Duke Wilhelm II of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , with whom he had five daughters. After a pilgrimage from 1491 to 1492 with the goals of Palestine, Rome and Loreto, Wilhelm fell ill, probably with syphilis , and left the government to his brother, Wilhelm II, on June 3, 1493 because of the resulting mental illness . He retired to Spangenberg Castle where he died in 1515.
His widow left Hessen and died in Worms in 1520 , where she was buried in the Andreasstift .
