Wilhelm Jakob Wippel (often also Jacob ; born September 3, 1760 in Berlin ; † November 2, 1834 there ) was a German educator and librarian .

Life

Wippel was the son of the rector of the Berlin grammar school for the gray monastery Johann Jakob Wippel. After his father died early, his mother was unable to raise the funds for an adequate school education. His sister, who had married the principal of the Latin school in Neuruppin , took him in and made it possible for him to attend school. In 1769 he returned to Berlin. There he graduated from the Gray Monastery high school until 1782. This was followed by a study of theology at the University of Halle until 1784 . However, at that time he had already made the decision to practice the teaching profession.

Wippel was appointed rector of the Berlin Garrison School on August 3, 1784 by the governor of Berlin General Wichard von Möllendorff . In preparation for this position he attended the model school in Reckahn and the garrison school in Potsdam. He then fundamentally reformed the Berlin Garrison School. The regulations he drafted were maintained until the school was closed in 1849 and received attention beyond the school.

In 1785, Wippel received a senior teaching position at the Neue Kadettenanstalt in Berlin in addition to his position as rector . In 1789 he was appointed professor of fine literature and the arts. He gave up the post of rector of the garrison school in 1792. In 1810 he was appointed archivist at the cadet institute. When he resigned his professorship on September 21, 1819, he took over the management of the institution's library. On August 3, 1834, he celebrated his fiftieth anniversary of service, shortly afterwards, on November 2, 1734, he died after a brief serious illness.
