Wilhelm Koch (born July 30, 1845 in Cologne , † December 10, 1891 ibid) was one of the first popular dialect poets of the Cologne language .

Life

According to his parents' wish that Wilhelm should be trained as a priest , he began his school education at the Cologne Cathedral School . After graduating from high school at Marzellegymnasium , Wilhelm Koch joined the postal service as a civil servant . At the same time he began writing mostly humorous little stories. In 1872 he resigned his position at the post office and from then on worked as an editor for the Speyerer Zeitung. He also wrote texts for the Mosel newspaper in Trier . In 1876 Wilhelm Koch returned to Cologne. Here he lived in Cologne-Ehrenfeld and earned his living as a freelance writer . He occasionally wrote fiction and cultural-political texts for various Cologne daily newspapers, including the Kölnische Volkszeitung . In addition, he became known in Cologne for his humorous columns and features , which he occasionally wrote in the Cologne language. From December 1881 he published regularly in daily newspapers.

Koch became popular through his sometimes coarse, humorous stories, which he published in the volumes of short stories Kölsche Scheldereie . In his decision to write down stories in the Cologne dialect , he oriented himself on the stories of his role model, the Low German dialect poet Fritz Reuter .

“It has long been my intention to write a story in the Cologne dialect in the style of the witty and cozy novels by Fritz Reuter. But it was also the mastery with which Reuter treated the Mecklenburg dialect that kept me from taking action because I was well aware that in more ways than one I would not be able to match my famous role model. But the attempt must be dared. "

The stories, poems and songs for the Cologne Carnival in the Cologne language contributed to the writer's popularity in Cologne. From 1886 to 1889, Wilhelm Koch was editor of the Cologne monthly Alaaf Köln together with Peter Paul Faust . He lived in a representative house on Cologne's Flora , on Stammheimer Strasse in Cologne-Riehl .

After a brief serious illness and several operations, Wilhelm Koch died on December 10, 1891 at the age of 46. He was buried in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (hall 58). Wilhelm Koch was married and had five children. His son, Heinrich Koch (1874–1940) was also known as a Cologne dialect author.
