Wilhelm Kopp (Admiral)

Wilhelm Kopp (born March 22, 1882 in Wellerswalde , Saxony , † September 17, 1963 in Hamburg ) was a German naval officer , most recently Rear Admiral of the Navy .

Life

On April 10, 1899, Kopp joined the Imperial Navy as a midshipman . After basic training , he was promoted to ensign on April 10, 1900 and on September 27, 1902 to lieutenant in the sea . On March 21, 1905, Kopp was first lieutenant at sea and on June 16, 1909, lieutenant captain . During this time, Kopp served in various functions on land and at sea.

On January 7, 1913, Kopp traveled with his wife and son to Tsingtau in the German colony of Kiautschou . The crossing on the steamer Queen Luise lasted until February 18th. Kopp was in Tsingtao then chief of the 1st Company of the sailors artillery department "Kiautschou". During the mobilization for World War I , Kopp commanded Fort Huitschuenhuk during the siege of Tsingtau . After the conquest of Tsingtao by Japanese forces he came in November 1914 in Japanese prisoner of war and was brought to Japan. In December 1919, Kopp was released and returned to Germany on April 18, 1920. On January 30, he was promoted to captain of the corvette , the patent was dated April 26, 1917. From 1920 to 1924, Kopp was then a sports officer with the staff of the North Sea Naval Station . On November 1, 1923, he was promoted to frigate captain . In 1924, Kopp started teaching at one of the naval schools, was promoted to sea captain on April 1, 1926 , and retired on September 30, 1926.

On October 1, 1936, he was reactivated and served as commander of the military district commandos Stade and Hamburg IV until 1941. From June to November 1941, Kopp was in command of the Naval Defense R (Leningrad, Northern Russia) and then in command of the Naval Defense in Ukraine . On February 1, 1942, he was promoted to Rear Admiral. In January 1943, Kopp was briefly in command of the Loire naval defense in St. Nazaire . It was made available to the High Command of the Navy on April 1943 and adopted on June 30, 1943. He then lived in Hamburg until his death.
