NGC 5690 is a 12.0 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type Sc with extensive star formation regions in the constellation Virgo in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 78 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter. Together with another 30 galaxies, it is a member of the NGC 5746 group ( LGG 386 ).
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 5725 .
The object was discovered on April 30, 1786 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which she labeled “F, mE, resolvable, 2 ′ long, 0.25 ′ broad; following a star 6th mag, 16 seconds in time ”.
