NGC 5688 is an 11.9 mag barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Wolf and about 119 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered on June 1, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who noted "not vF, S, vgbM, 25 arcseconds, among stars".
