Arp 274 = NGC 5679 is a group of three galaxies in the constellation Virgo . It has not been conclusively clarified whether the galaxies interact with each other or whether they are at different distances and just happen to be on the same line of sight. The lack of deformations typical of gravitationally interacting systems and measurements of the radial velocity rather suggest the latter.

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy triplet belongs to the class double galaxies with linked arms .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on May 12, 1793 .
