NGC 5706 , also listed twice in the catalog as NGC 5699 , is a 14.8 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E3 in the constellation Bear Guardian .
It was discovered on April 14, 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who called it “Two. 3 ′ distant, on the same parallel; the following [NGC 5706] is vF, vS, iR ”. The second galaxy named is NGC 5703/5709 .
Due to an incorrect position specification by Herschel of more than one degree, Dreyer noted “lost” for this galaxy when creating the catalog. The discovery of Édouard Stephan on May 12, 1883 was recorded as NGC 5706 and has been listed under this number until today. Herschel's mistake could only be discovered and corrected in 1912.
