NGC 5718 is a 13.2 mag bright, lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type E-S0 in the constellation of Virgo and about 367 million ly from the Milky Way. Together with IC 1042 it forms the galaxy pair Arp 171 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies with diffuse opposing arms (Arp catalog) .
The galaxy was discovered on April 30, 1786 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflecting telescope, who described it as "vF, S, preceding and in a line with 2 bright stars".
