IC 1042 is a lenticular galaxy of Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo and about 357 million light-years from the Milky Way center. Together with NGC 5718 it forms the galaxy pair Arp 171 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class galaxies with diffuse opposing arms (Arp catalog) .
The galaxy was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on May 28, 1891 .
