Wilhelm List (painter)
Wilhelm Franz List (born November 22, 1864 in Vienna , † February 10, 1918 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist of Art Nouveau .
Life
Wilhelm List was the son of Karl Maximilian List, an engineer from the municipal building authority, and his wife Sidonie Schneider. After studying philosophy at the University of Vienna , he studied from 1885 to 1889 at the Vienna Academy with Christian Griepenkerl , then in Munich and with William Adolphe Bouguereau in Paris . From 1893 List exhibited in the Künstlerhaus Wien and in 1896 became a member of the Künstlerhaus, but in 1897 he became a co-founder of the Vienna Secession and exhibited there regularly. In 1900/01 he headed the editorial department of their magazine Ver Sacrum and was one of the twelve illustrators of the 1902 catalog of the Vienna Secession, to which Beethoven was dedicated. In 1905 he left the Secession together with the artists around Gustav Klimt .

Wilhelm List was an Art Nouveau artist. In terms of technology, his pictures are similar to those of Gustav Klimt. Thematically, he dealt with portraits, landscapes and genre pictures, often with fairytale or mythological subjects. His graphics, woodcuts and lithographs are particularly important.
