Wilhelm Mehl

Wilhelm Mehl (born May 8, 1893 in Haldensleben ; † May 7, 1940 in Warthegau ) was a German teacher and local researcher .

Life

Wilhelm Mehl took part in the First World War as a soldier from 1916 and was awarded the Iron Cross, First Class. With the rank of lieutenant he came into British captivity .

Mehl had been employed at the Pestalozzi School in Tangermünde since 1923 . In 1926 he founded the Tangermünde Museum Association to promote local history in Tangermünde and the surrounding area , the forerunner of today's Tangermünde City History Museum . In addition to his work as a museum director, he wrote articles for the Tangermünder Anzeiger. For the millennium of Tangermünde in 1933, he organized an open-air festival “'The Swedes are coming!' The equestrian game during the millennium ”. He became the archivist of the Tangermünde-Stadt care district and was responsible for nature conservation in the Stendal district .

Mehl's life was concerned with the history and development of Tangermünde. He wrote numerous publications on this.

At the beginning of the Second World War he was involved in the invasion of Poland . At the beginning of May 1940 he died of a heart attack with the rank of first lieutenant in Poland .

His name is immortalized on a memorial column for the fallen in Tangermünde's municipal cemetery.
