Wilhelm Rode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Rode ( February 17, 1887 in Hanover - September 2, 1959 in Munich ) was a German opera singer (bass) and director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1934 to 1943 . Rode's career is considered a "characteristic example of favoritism in the 'Third Reich'".

Life

In 1913, Wilhelm Rode performed the Neue Theateralmanach as an opera soloist at the Bremerhaven City Theater. Rode also made a guest appearance at the Salzburg Festival . In 1929 he was the second occupation of Don Pizarro, the villain in Fidelio , in 1930 the replacement for Hans Hermann Nissen as the adulterous Count Almaviva in the wedding of Figaro and again Don Pizarro, in 1931 again Count Almaviva and second occupation of Don Pizarro, again in 1932 Don Pizarro. In 1933 - not until July 27, only two days before the performance - he suddenly canceled his participation as Don Pizarro "for political reasons" and added that he would come to the "purely German festival" next year. The Austrian bass-baritone Alfred Jerger sang in his place - so successfully that he retained the role until the annexation of Austria .

Rode was never invited to the Salzburg Festival again.

At the Vienna State Opera he appeared 17 times as the diabolical Barone Scarpia in Tosca , seven times as Don Pizarro and twice as Wanderer in Siegfried . But he also sang heroic baritone roles such as Amonasro ( Aida ) , Rigoletto and Simone Boccanegra , Escamillo ( Carmen ) , the Dutchman , Amfortas ( Parsifal ) and Jochanaan ( Salome ) .
