Wilhelm Sprengel

Wilhelm Sprengel (born January 14, 1792 in Halle (Saale) ; † November 18, 1828 in Greifswald ) was a German surgeon and university professor.

Wilhelm Sprengel was the eldest son of the botanist Kurt Sprengel (1766–1833) and his wife Sophia Henriette Caroline Keferstein (1767–1839). He attended high schools in Merseburg and Halle and began studying medicine at the University of Halle in 1810 . In 1813 he volunteered for the military and was used as a surgeon in Teplitz and Ratibor in the hospital. In 1815 he was transferred to the main hospital in Düsseldorf.

In 1816 Sprengel received his doctorate in Halle and in 1817 passed the state examinations at the University of Berlin . He made a six-month educational trip to Vienna and was employed as a garrison medical officer in Wittenberg in 1818 . In 1821 he received the professorship for medicine and surgery at the University of Greifswald . In 1825/26 Sprengel was elected rector of the university.
