Wilhelm Stern (pedagogue)

Wilhelm Stern (born April 22, 1792 in Mosbach , † March 31, 1873 in Karlsruhe ) was a German educator .

Wilhelm Stern, influenced by Pestalozzi , had a great influence on elementary schools in Baden as professor and director of the teacher training college in Karlsruhe . He has written numerous textbooks.

Life

Wilhelm Stern was born as the son of master baker Martin Stern in Mosbach and grew up there. From the age of 14 he attended the Lyzeum in Karlsruhe , where Johann Peter Hebel had a great influence on his intellectual development. This was followed by studying theology and natural science in Heidelberg . Driven from Heidelberg by warlike events around 1813, he completed his studies in Tübingen . After graduating, he worked for his teacher and friend Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi on Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. In 1823 he was entrusted with setting up the Protestant teacher training institute in Karlsruhe. He was friends with the educators Heinrich Dittmar and Heinrich Wilhelm David Heman in the Palatinate town of Grünstadt , whom he visited there frequently in the 1830s.

As a teacher, professor and director of the teachers' seminar in Karlsruhe, Wilhelm Stern had a decisive influence on the school system in Baden. His numerous language, reading and arithmetic books were used in Baden school lessons for decades. Wilhelm Stern died at the age of 80 on March 31, 1873.

The Wilhelm Stern primary school in Mosbach is named after him.
