Wilhelm Ernst Alexis Hermann von Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld (born March 1, 1905 in Rotenburg an der Fulda , † April 30, 1942 in Gor near Bjeloi, Russia ) was the main storm leader of the Waffen SS in World War II . He was titular Landgrave of Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld .

Life

Prince Wilhelm was the first-born son Landgrave Chlodwig von Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld (1876-1954) and his wife Caroline Princess von Solms-Hohensolms-Lich (1877-1958), daughter of Prince Hermann , in their hometown of Lich . He had four siblings, two sisters and two brothers: Ernst Ludwig (1906–1934), Irene (1907–1980), Alexis Friedrich (1911–1939) and Viktoria Cäcilie (1914–1998). Brother Alexis, who suffered from epilepsy , was sterilized by the Nazis on September 27, 1938, and died a year later.

Wilhelm took part in the Second World War as a tank officer (Hauptmann dR) and was deployed with the 2nd SS Panzer Division in Poland and France (including near Dunkirk). He then fought in Greece and Romania and fell off Moscow in the spring of 1942 .

In the time of National Socialism he belonged to the NSDAP since April 20, 1932 after the list of those party members who are members of princely houses ( membership number 52.711).
