Count Wilhelm Albrecht Carl Otto Alexander von Hohenau (born November 27, 1884 in Berlin , † April 11, 1957 in Hamburg ) was a German tournament rider.

Life

Wilhelm, also called Willi, was a son of Count Friedrich von Hohenau from his marriage to (1857-1914) Charlotte from the ceiling (1863-1933), the daughter of Julius from the ceiling and his wife Hedwig, née von Kleist was . He was a grandson of Prince Albrecht of Prussia , the youngest brother of Kaiser Wilhelm I , King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia and Tsarina Alexandra Fjodorowna , and his second morganatic wife, Rosalie Countess von Hohenau , née von Rauch . He was great-grandson of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. and Queen Luise as well as 2nd cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

After visiting the Prussian main cadet institution Gross-Lichterfelde , Hohenau served as a cavalry officer in the regiment of the Gardes du Corps , then in the body cuirassier regiment "Großer Kurfürst" (Silesian) No. 1 in Breslau and finally at the Military Riding Institute in Hanover. In 1912 he was at the Olympic Games in Stockholm bronze medalist in team show jumping and took 6th place in individual jumping.

In the following decades Hohenau was considered to be the most successful German racing and tournament rider who could achieve countless victories. On the Hanoverian "Apoll" he won the German jumping derby in Klein Flottbek in 1926 . In January 1931 Hohenau and Carl-Friedrich von Langen were awarded the golden equestrian badge , which at that time had only been awarded to nine riders. Later he worked as a riding instructor in the Flottbeker riding club in Hamburg.

From his first marriage to Countess Anna Henckel von Donnersmarck (1894–1946) he had two children: daughter Charlotte (1917–2016) and son Albrecht, who died in 1940 as a 20-year-old officer candidate in France. His second wife was the committed rider Ellen ("Ellenka") Retemeyer-Ketschendorf (1899–1989) since 1932 .
